The basement harbors perfect conditions for the growth of mold in your home. It's used as a storage area, and therefore there is very little heat. The air can easily become damp when there is a leaky pipe in the basement.. Add to that the fact that the basement is rarely as developed and as well ventilated as the rest of the house and you have all the perfect conditions for a moldy basement. Mold in the basement can cover all surfaces -- walls, ceiling tiles, and cement sheets. Any wooden cabinetry or furniture you have in the basement is susceptible to mold infestation.
Of all the places where mold can fester and grow, the basement is the most dangerous. This is because the spores can easily find their way out of the basement and into the main house above through the vents and ducts of the HVAC system in the basement. Once inside the main house, these spores will feely disperse into the air, and begin to settle down in different parts of the house, causing severe Asthma and other respiratory illnesses. To combat mold and mildew in your basement, make sure there are sufficient artificial ventilation systems in place like air conditioners and ceiling fans. Make sure there is no dampness in the basement -- get leaky pipes fixed immediately.
If you notice mold in the basement, don't try to scrub off the spores or wash them with detergent. Scrubbing only shakes the spores free, and detergents are completely useless on mold and mildew.
